Australians still unaccounted for in Haiti

Following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, the Red Cross has offered a cautious death toll estimate of between 45, 000 and 50, 000.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs says that there is a ‘small number’ of Australians still unaccounted for in Haiti, although as yet there is no evidence of any Australian deaths.

An estimated 3 million people require assistance, however, delivery of aid is proving to be a logistical nightmare, with power and telecommunications rarely functioning.
