FridaI Want In Your Head
Indie

- Strap on some flower-shaped sunglasses, lean back and relax as Frida take you on a guided tour of their new EP I Want In Your Head; a psychedelic, kaleidoscopic sunbeam punctuated with lush melodies, undulating rhythms and soaring, sparkly vocals care of front woman-slash-goddess Eilish Gilligan.

The Melbourne five piece served up the first taste of their I Want In Your Head flavoured Kool Aid in April this year, with the release of Limbo; a swirling, ethereal, synth driven number. Shimmering retro keys bring buoyancy to the track while yearning vocals conjure long forgotten melancholy, catching like a lump in your throat.

Everything (Is You), the lead single off the EP slow burns with caramel guitar grooves, airy synth coddles without suffocating and Gilligan’s icy vocals cut through the cozy haze with surgeon-like precision.

A purposeful nod toward psychedelia of yesteryear, Fence shines as the layered, expansive cornerstone of the EP, blooming like a lotus flower folding infinitely outward. Gang vocals coo at you from behind a veil of glittery guitars and whirring synth. Giving a voice to the ever-present devil on your shoulder are reverb-laden lyrics that reiterate the EP’s title “I Want In Your Head”. The nagging request eats at you; who wants inside? A needy lover, or a needed vice?

Entrancing and dreamy, Frida know what they’re doing as they balance pop and psych so delicately and palatably, not too far removed from Tame Impala’s genre fluid Currents. An aptly named release, the five tracks are hooky enough to swirl around your head for days, your mind playing host to a shining ear worm, grinning toothily back at you as you descend from the clouds. I’m popping this one on repeat and charging that ear worm rent, so excuse me while I kiss the sky.
