Live Review

Boo Seeka @ The Triffid

Cruising into The Triffid, I thought I was just in for a smooth night, entailing a few drinks and “chill bro/indie-tronica vibes” as I’ve seen Boo Seeka’s sound defined. I had listened to the album a number of times, and am usually a keen investor in deep cut album tracks but this time I was more excited to see the classic hits and well known singles.

Although I loved and appreciated the soaring vocals and groovy beats of Boo Seeka’s debut album ‘Never Too Soon’, my initial thoughts were that some of the tracks were slightly monotonous. However, if I could describe this concert experience visually it would take the form of a popup book, bringing to life this album in unexpected and exciting illustrations. The entire performance was stunning; from the smoky lighting cues to the ethereal synthetic beats, unique vocals and charismatic stage presence.

Boo Seeka opened with a slinky instrumental intro before sliding into ‘Fool’ to get the audience amped. Their set list intertwined perfectly, showcasing single sensations ‘Deception Bay’ and ‘Oh My’ sprinkled with well received album tracks from ‘Never Too Soon’. Before giving the sold out crowd their debut single, lead singer Ben chatted about Boo Seeka’s spontaneous origins then welcomed ‘Kingdom Leader’ with a soulful Tracy Chapman prelude.

Each track preached a mesmerising combination of Ben’s charismatic stage presence and  interesting hybrid of folk/soul/croon vocals with Sam’s synthy drum beats plus the addition of fantastically passionate body rolling (reminiscent of Spider from No Vacancy in School of Rock – but with more soul).

The two songs to close out a carefully curated set list were ‘Turn up Your Light’ and the outstanding crowd (& personal) favourite, ‘Does This Last’. Seeing this track performed live was unbelievable and their request for people to hop up on their friends shoulders added to the dreamy community atmosphere of the whole night.

With smiles tattooed on everyone’s faces, we floated out to the beer garden only to spot the band graciously chatting to a swarm of admiring punters. If you do get the chance, go and see Boo Seeka live – I dare you.
