Live Review

Crooked Colours @ The Woolly Mammoth

Crooked Colours are a fresh electronic trio from Perth, Western Australia, comprising of Philip Slabber, Leon Debaughn and Liam Merrett-Park. Musos, Djs and music producers all in one their sound is a smooth cross between indie and dark electronic beats. Crooked Colours’ sound has often been compared to indie-rock foursome Alt J and US electronic/house duo Crystal Castles. The group spent eighteen months in the studio working on their recently released debut album VERA and with the first track release Flow receiving high praise from triple j it was no surprise they paired their debut album release with yet another headlining national tour.

Saturday the 12th of August, Crooked Colours took to the main stage of Brisbane venue Woolly Mammoth  and from the moment the strobe lights began flashing erratically the audience was going wild. The guys opened with a crowd favourite Flow, which set the tone for the night with its catchy tune and light electronicas sprinkled throughout - the audience was singing along through the chorus and already there was a mosh of dancing punters forming at the front of the stage.

After their opening song Philip greeted the Brisbane crowd, “What the fuck is up Brisbane!? Are you ready to have a good time?”. The energy of the audience picked up another level as they went into their next track Running Blood, which has a really cool reggae vibe and gave the audience a chance to appreciate the variety these guys have on the recent album.

The entire night was an epic rave party from the incredible lighting that helped create an electronic club vibe, to the variety of sound through Crooked Colours’ music and even the energy of the crowd seemed particularly upbeat; probably because the guys have created a decent following in Brisbane.

All-in-all this was a great night, and definitely the best I’ve seen Crooked Colours perform live to date. You can really tell they are growing as artists, and finding their place in the music community.
