Do we need to open our ocean's seabeds up to mining? Deep Seabed mining is a new frontier.

4ZZZ’s Eliot Rifkin chatted with Nat Lowrey the Communications Coordinator from the Deep Sea Mining Campaign about how this relatively new mining method is being touted for obtaining the ‘rare earth’ minerals used in smartphones, batteries, high-tech and green energies with unknown impact on deepsea volcanic steam vent ecologies in Papua New Guinea.

For a Deep Dive... visit the Deep Sea Mining Campaign to learn about what is deep sea mining, what is at risk as well as what you can do. There's all kinds of reports and resources on Nat's site. They also have a Facebook presence, as do Papua New Guinea's Alliance of Solwara Warriors. And one of the many BBC's Science editor David Shukman's articles.
