Do you know much about The Redland shire to our south? Were you aware it was Brisbane’s food bowl and was covered with strawberry farms? What happened to all those strawberry farms and how many are left?

4ZZZ’s Eliot Rifkin & Toni Pankaluic chatted about Redland’s history and its recent strawberry farm past with Vicki Ward from the Redland Museum.

For a deep dive...

Check out the Redland Museum website where you will discover a treasure trove of history about the Redland's Coast as well as information about upcoming events.

An example of Redland's history is Willard’s Farm, the first farm in the area (est. 1863). As a result of its historic significance, Redland City Council purchased the farm to save it from residential development. Angela Puata (a local historian and author from Redland Museum), can share Willard's Farm's significance - to book call - 07 3286 3494.

Here are two petitions aimed at protecting The Redlands & Straddie from further development: the Birkdale whitewater centre proposal and the Olympic Canoe Slalom Venue proposal.

The last remaining Redland strawberry farm is the Wellington Point farm. Due to its fresh food shop and restaurant, the farm is popular among locals. Luna Farm Organics is another local business specialising in seasonal vegetables, who sell at street markets.

The RedFest Strawberry Redlands Coast Festival returns (after a three year hiatus on September 2-3, 2023) showcasing a variety of drinks, foods and musicians.

Speaking about of all things strawberries, take a glimpse at The Big Strawberry out at Elimbah and here's some popular strawberry food recipes: Strawberry Milkshake and Strawberry Jam.
