In our first chat, ‘Magic Mushrooms’ Part 1, we introduced you to psilocybin mushrooms in general… Gold Tops and Blue Meanies, as well as the renewed interest for therapeutic use. Well, things have progressed…
In this 2nd part, we chat about Australia’s first psilocybin mushroom farm as well as a deeper look into mushrooms.
Did you know, last February the Therapeutic Drug Association legalised psilocybin use in treating certain types of depression? Where are we at with the current TGA status now?
4ZZZʻs Eliot Rifkin spoke with Dr Alistair McTaggart, a mycologist who is part of the psilocybin mushroom farm.
For a deep dive...
Listen to 4ZZZʻs first instalment here, Magic Mushrooms - Part 1.
Here’s Dr Alistair McTaggart’s Magic Mushroom blog which goes in depth on psilocybin mushrooms as well as analysing the findings on psilocybin research. If you’d like some more info on the medical clinical aspects of psilocybin mushrooms, visit Mind Medicine Australia and PRISM.
Dig into some new Psilocybe subaeruginosa (sub aka Blue Meanies) research, or a newly published research paper on Psilocybe cubensis (cubes aka Gold Caps)
If it's trials that you're after, visit WA's Swinburne University to learn about a current psilocybin medical trial in treating depression. Here's a current list and overview of the other various psilocybin-assisted therapy trials in Australia and New Zealand (as of 2024).
Info on Oregon's regulated psilocybin-assisted therapy system (USAʻs first ) is a legalised model that’s quickly spreading. A similar bill is awaiting signature in California, and the USA state of Colorado has already passed a law that, in addition to setting up a state-regulated psychedelic therapy pipeline, has also decriminalised limited cultivation, possession and consumption of psychedelic mushrooms.
If your thing is following the work that the psilocybin labs and farms are doing visit Oregonʻs fungal research lab - the Tryp Lab or our very own Funky Fungus which cultivates magic mushrooms for use in psilocybin research and drug development under a schedule 9 license here in Australia.
...and finally, a link to the Queensland Mycological Society for anyone who wants to join the mycological community.
