Yes, we’ve all heard the song “baby shark, do do do do do” but do you know what little ninjas these baby sharks can be? It turns out they are incredible escape artists and science is only just finding out the why and how behind their incredible manouvers. 4ZZZ's intrepid reporter, Anita Diamond interviewed Professor Jodie Rummer, who conducted a study looking into how these baby sharks swim to avoid predator attacks.
For a deep dive...
You can read the full study of Professor Rummer's on newborn reef sharks which is open access to the public. Or can find out more on shark conservation physiology at Physioshark, led by Dr Jodie Rummer which focuses on protecting future generations of sharks as they face threats in an ever changing climate. You can also read more about Dr Jodie's research and future programs she will be running at her website, including her TED talks and more on baby black tip sharks. There is also some beautiful, insprational marine biology imagery at the James Cook University website for Marine and Aquaculture Research. And don't forget to get involved in Citizen Science programs in an area near you, Google up your suburb and chances are there is one in your topic of interest!
