Pelican and Seabird Rescue
Our Pelicans and Seabirds are magnificent. Their behaviour is part of the natural fabric to our marine habitat bringing nutrients and keeping the ecological balance. Unfortunately, many of our precious native birds who are otherwise healthy end up losing their life unnecessarily because of entanglements from fishing tackle, weed matting, disposal masks, socks and a variety of objects. Worse yet, some are even intentionally abused by humans.
Our local Pelican and Seabird Rescue specialise in rescuing injured native birds that can still fly.
Hammy Forrest president of the Pelican and Seabird Rescue joined 4ZZZ’s Eliot Rifkin back in 2018 to chat about their organisation, living with wildlife & tips on preserving their environments.

Here are some fun facts for pelicans as well as for seagulls. Did you know people confuse our local seagull (known as the silver gull) with the herring gull, also known as 'silver gull' in many European languages?
