- I'm still not 100% sure where the hell Dick Diver came from, or how they snuck up and infected my entire lifestream without alerting me to their presence what-so-ever, but I can tell you one thing I do know - and that is that I'm absolutely, totally okay with it. In a more literal sense, scrappy upstarts Dick Diver were conceived in Melbourne, which makes sense - there's definitely a down-south, Victorian kinda vibe flowing throw these warm, tender, engrossing tracks. Sharing members with and involving a slew of other like-minded, modern day, musical luminaries such as the UV Race, Total Control & Eddy Current Suppression Ring, young Dick Diver already come packed with a certain pedigree and confidence to bravely go against the grain, these dudes are playing by their own rules, and no-body dares say a word, for fear of getting a musical beat down of epic proportions. Apparently their first material written as more of a complete unit, debut long-player New Start Again is a well-rounded effort and nothing here feels out of place in the grand scheme. Interestingly enough, Dick Diver seem to excel most when they move away from the standard scrappy pop structures and lose themselves in their instrumentation, really working up quite a lather when they get their jam on. Standout cut, Flying Teatowel Blues has this Drones-esque quality about it, a darkness and intensity that I can only imagine would be brutal live. On a sidenote, credit must go to Dick Diver, for getting away with calling your band Dick Diver and not being the worst band in the world, and again forcing me to stop judging books by their egregiously phallic covers. Well played.
