- Berlin-based (but Perth native) Guy Contact (aka Callum Chute) has just released a new EP titled Out Of My Head (Into My Body) on Berlin’s X-Kalay. The label has released some Aussie standouts of note already (for instance Andy Garvey, Lou Karsh aka Reptant). Again they've produced a strong record in Out Of My Head, Contact's EP lets him flex his dancefloor prowess.
The titular Out Of My Head is almost prescriptive in its title - inviting the lister to cast everything aside and dance with reckless abandon. The spoken word intro gives way to a heavy trancey-bassline that’s sure to make you move. It’s a slower burn of a song, with nice pads, floaty synths and a lovely breakdown that, as the title suggests, takes you on an inward journey and, out of your head. Also the superb sequencing is of note, as is that syncopated bass.
A personal favorite is Amygdala Tongue Wobble, with its simply dirty bounce and rolling bassline. These are complemented by dubbed out noise hits and other electronic gurgles. Naturally over time an acid line slowly bubbles up and is brought to the fore. Again the breakdown delivers a bouncy, syncopated bassline mixed with some breaks for maximum effect.
Optimystic is a similarly feel good track, with enveloping pads, a shuffling beat and beautiful chords and vocal stabs. Had me reminiscing about Soichi Terada’s excellent Ape Escape soundtracks. I also adore the chilled breakdown before it gets back into it.
It’s been a pleasure to hear Guy Contact's development over the years, his techno and electro leaning sounds travelling through broader genres and tempos. There's a swathe of Perth and Aussie producers who can make it work overseas with more active dance music scenes there.
It’s great to see the likes of Roza Terenzi, Shedbug, Rudolf C, and X Club all relocate overseas to further their careers. Guy Contact very much belongs in such esteemed company; top notch stuff.
